Make it happen

What’s a job you would like to do for just one day?

Every morning when I get to my job (a high school), I go for a two-mile walk around the interior of the building. During this time, I typically respond to this prompt and enjoy some music before getting started with my day. Although I did not initially go to school to become a teacher and I am a career changer, I find myself in a position that I love beyond words and I’m grateful to be an educator. However, I am a quarter-way through my walk and I cannot think of not one job that I would like to do for just one day!

Ok, I could go with the typical “be the president of the country,” or “be a CEO of a large company,” yet I know that even on their best days, that job is not better than mine. For as much as I live in the hypothetical, I also dwell in a realm of reality. The jobs and positions that we often idolize are not as idyllic as we perceive them to be. They often come with an immense amount of stress and difficulty, adding gray hairs while reducing life expectancy. I have also learned that the higher the salary, the more responsibilities one bears and the sharper the sword one must fall on in times of crisis (not to mention the more eyes scrutinizing every action/inaction that is taken).

Yet I do recall the days when I wanted to be a Pediatric Neurosurgeon like Dr. Ben Carson (looooong before his politicking days), a hair stylist (back when we called them hairdressers), and a Wall Street mega genius (obviously before the Great Recession of 2008). The Michelle of today realizes that I can’t stand the sight of blood, my feet and my back were not made to stand for hours on end, and I like peace more than money. And just for chips and giggles, I did go to law school for about three months as a way of complementing my Master’s in Public Administration and entering the world of politics.   That was a short-lived dream that often revisits me from time to time…

All of that to say this, if I could do any job for a day, I would be a world-traveling public speaker and photographer- a woman with no home to call her own, but instead a passport and SD card filled with all the homes of others.

Hmm, that actually does sound quite amazing; I might have to make it happen…
