Smiles & Gratitude

What was the last live performance you saw?

Knowing how vicious their kind is portrayed to be, I had never considered visiting one of them live…

The first concert that I ever attended was The Scream Tour back in 2003. I was such a fan of B2K and the thought of watching them perform live was all I needed to soothe the wounds of failing my driver’s license test. It was supposed to be a birthday gift and surprise but when I failed the test and wouldn’t stop crying for hours, my family had to spill the beans to calm me down.

Since that time, I have only been to about a dozen live performances, as my anxiety has increased and my desire to be around large crowds of people has decreased. So when my Love approached me about going to this particular performance, it shocked even me that my only response- with no hesitation- was YES.

We’ve all seen videos of comedians devouring unsuspecting prey as they watch from the audience. Comedians can be the most hilarious people in the world… when they aren’t making jokes at our own expense. And even though a part of me knew that this particular show wouldn’t be vicious, I knew that by attending, I did open myself up to the possibility of being the target of a well-timed joke.

My Love, Bonus Love, and I all piled into the rental car that Saturday morning and prepared to drive the three hours to Richmond in pursuit of the performance. The drive ended up being significantly longer than expected and my body cried out with pain (perks of being 38 and having scoliosis). Yet all of my anxiety was put to rest when we pulled up at the venue- a basketball arena, now converted into a church. Hmm, you can’t decimate a person in church, right?

From the moment I crossed the parking lot into the church, I felt safe and at home. For more reasons than this prompt allows, I can truly say that that evening was life-changing for me. But what I will say is that what was an opportunity to see KevOnStage (comedian, Kevin Fredericks) and other Christian comedians perform live was one of the best experiences of my life. No vultures and devastation; just smiles and gratitude.
